THE QUICK CHECK
Congratulations on your decision to purchase the Quick Check! You will soon learn what a time and money saving product this is! First a few things about your tester. The Quick Check is a full blown diagnostic tester and will do everything that the other more expensive units will do. The Quick Check has no internal batteries or power packs so you will never have to worry about charging. This unique tester runs on a single 9v alkaline battery. One 9v battery will run a valve for over three hours straight! Your tester is not water proof but it is water resistant. A little water on the unit wont hurt but you should not submerge it.
The first time you power up your unit you will notice that the yellow light will begin to flash this means that the unit is charging up. It takes about fifteen seconds for the unit to charge up then it is ready for action. After every valve activation the unit will have to charge up, again this will take about fifteen seconds. After you push the valve activation button the units light will go out and then it will start flashing. The lights will flash faster and faster until they stay on solid, that is the ready indication. Once the units light quits flashing you're ready to activate another valve. Don't try to activate a valve until the light quits flashing because you will only be at half power. When the light quits flashing you will have about 36 volts ready for activating the valve. (This flashing process is very similar to a cameras flashing red light.)
Now about the battery. We suggest using a high quality 9v battery such as Duracell or Energizer this type of battery will give you more power output for a longer time than the other cheaper batteries. The Quick Check has a built in battery low feature. When the battery goes below 6.5v the beeper will sound continuously when any of the lights are on. (Normally the beeper only sounds when the red light is on.)The unit will still operate normally but you should replace the battery.
This high tech tester will break your system down into three basic parts, with easy go-no-go indications. The Quick Check will let you know if your irrigation timer is working, if you have broken wires, if your solenoids are good and it will activate your valves. (It is also great for testing transformers.) DO NOT CONNECT IT TO 110VAC THIS WILL DAMAGE THE UNIT! All of this can be accomplished with a few easy tests.
TEST 1: Power test at the timer
To test the power coming from your timer follow these simple procedures. 1) Disconnect the wires going out to your valves. 2) Connect one of the Quick Check leads to the common terminal and the other to the station output terminal. 3) Turn the station in question on. 4) Turn the unit on and observe the light readings. If the red and yellow lights are both on it means you have good power output. If only the yellow light comes on it means you have no power out from the timer.
TEST 2: Solenoid / Wire test at the timer
To check the condition of your wires and your solenoid from the timer follow these simple procedures. 1) Disconnect the common and the station wire that your testing. 2) Connect the Quick Check test leads to the two wires. 3) Turn the unit on and observe the light readings....Yellow light means you have a broken wire or an open solenoid coil, Red light means you have a shorted solenoid coil, and a Green light means you have a good circuit and solenoid coil. 4) To activate the valve push the button! DO NOT TRY TO ACTIVATE A SOLENOID WITH A SHORTED COIL. THIS IS VERY HARD ON THE SWITCH AND MAY SHORTEN THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE SWITCH.
TEST 3: Solenoid test at the valve
To determine if you have a bad solenoid coil and not a bad set of wires go to the valve and follow these steps. 1)Cut the wires coming from the timer and remove any wire nuts or water tight connectors. 2)Strip and clean the solenoid wires. 4)Connect the Quick Check leads to the solenoid and observe the light readings.... Red light means you have a shorted solenoid, Yellow light means the solenoid coil is open, and a green light means the solenoid is good. 5)To turn the valve on push the button!
TEST 4: Power test at the valve
To test for power to the valve follow these easy steps. 1)Cut the wires going to the solenoid coil. 2)Remove any wire nuts or water tight connectors. 3)Turn the timer on to the station in question. 4)Connect the Quick Check tests leads to the wires coming from the timer. 5)Turn the unit on and observe the light readings. If the red and yellow lights are both on it means you have good power to the valve. If only the yellow light comes on it means you have no power to the valve!
